What it the most important and often missed component of Arc Flash Safety?

There are many pieces to Arc Flash Safety and implementing the Safe Work Practices of NFPA 70E. Below are some of the very important components of arc flash safety, but they are incomplete without the one, often missed, piece that ties them all together.

Arc Flash Study - An arc flash study is very important because it provides the necessary information used to determine hazard levels and necessary arc flash PPE.

Warning Labels – Arc flash warning labels are an important piece of any safety program because they provide arc flash and shock hazard level information at each piece of electrical equipment.

Arc Flash PPE – Arc flash Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is equally important because it protects the electrical workers from serious injury if applied properly.

Training – Electrical safety training is critical because it instructs the electrical workers on proper safety procedures, on the dangers of arc flash, on proper use of PPE and on the new safety procedures.

As important as all of these components are, they are not complete until the company develops a written policy on the overall safety program. This step is often overlooked. Often a company has written policies and procedures on some pieces of electrical safety such as Lock-Out-Tag-Out and requirements for the use of Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI), but the lack a written policy on energized work and arc flash safety. Therefore, before a company considers itself “up to date” on arc flash, it should review any existing electrical safety policies to make sure arc flash safety is included.
